Following the Footprints of Wipro, Infosys also opposes moonlighting, says any violation may lead to disciplinary action against employees
In the past few years, remote collaboration has gained momentum to the point where many companies and established businesses have adopted it as a viable business model and gone on a recruiting frenzy. With resources that were close by, dependable, and efficient, they could manage their operations. Financially and as a practical means of overcoming the pandemic issues, remote recruiting was the only option that made sense.
After Wipro, Infosys too prohibits moonlighting and warns that any violations could result in disciplinary action being taken against individuals.
The moonlighting policy, which allows employees to work additional tasks outside of normal hours of employment, has come under fire from another IT major, Infosys, weeks after Wipro CEO Rishad Premji called it “clear and straightforward cheating.”
Employees at Infosys have received an email alerting them that moonlighting is against the company’s code of conduct, according to ToI. According to the daily’s report, the IT major has explicitly said in its letter that any infraction in this area would result in disciplinary action, which may include employment termination.
With the slogans “No two-timing, No moonlighting,” and “No double lives,” Infosys stated that its employees are not permitted to accept other jobs either during or after regular working hours.
During the last 2 years of the pandemic, the moonlighting regulation gained prominence among remote workers since it made it simple for many employees to work on some personal independent gigs.
However, with some businesses, notably IT corporations, rolling back WFH, the policy has now become a contentious issue, with professionals and the general public having differing viewpoints.
But the reason why moonlighting has become a problem is a mystery. Actually, the majority of businesses do not feel secure allowing staff members to parallel work on tasks for other clients while working remotely.
The top IT businesses in India have recently made statements that indicate the issue has grown to be very serious.
“At Infosys, dual employment is not permitted as per the employee handbook and the code of conduct. As clearly stated in your offer letter, you agree not to take employment, whether full-time or part-time as director/ partner/member/ employee of any other organization/entity engaged in any form of business activity without the consent of Infosys. The consent may be given subject to any terms and conditions that the company may think fit and may be withdrawn at any time at the discretion of the company,” the mail from the company said.
In a recent interview with Infosys EVP group and head of Human resources Krish Shankar regarding side jobs, gig workers, and moonlighting, he turned down to address the topic directly but stated that the company encourages workers to take on internal jobs if they have the time and motivation to do so in addition to their regular job. We developed a platform specifically for that called Accelerate.
It was originally intended to intrigue the bench persons when it was first conceived a few years ago. However, Accelerate is now used for our inner gigs, and for the past two years, we have been awarding those who have taken on internal gigs, the man stated.
Moonlighting is treated differently by IT services companies than it is by some new-age Indian businesses. Recently, Swiggy revealed that its workers might accept other jobs as long as they were performed outside of regular working hours and did not negatively impact their performance at the food delivery business.
